Chaplain Gustavo Bentos

gustavo bentosGustavo Bentos was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. Bentos played professional soccer for 18 years. His playing career saw him spend time in Uruguay, Bolivia and Chile before coming to the United States. Fuller details of his playing career are on this Wikipedia page.

While playing in southern Chile, Temuco, Bentos met a missionary, Andres de Felice, who talked to him about Christ and invited him into his home. When Gustavo saw in Andres’ home and life that Christ was the center of everything, he could not stop thinking about it. It was everything he had always wanted since leaving home to play soccer.

Two months later, Bentos accepted Christ and was baptized. For the next two and a half years, Gustavo lived with Andres and his family and attended a local, Bible institute. His first work began as a Sunday school teacher, then as a pastor in practice, where God allowed him to shepherd the congregation of Lautaro UCB.

In January 2007, the Lord blessed Bentos once again, this time in getting married to his beautiful wife, Carolina.  While studying at the Bible institute, Bentos prayed for God to allow him another opportunity to again play professional soccer. In June 2007, God answered his prayers, and opened the door for Bentos to play in Copiapo, Chile. Here he continued to serve, this time in the town’s church.

In 2008, with a number of opportunities to play with different professional teams in Chile, Bentos and his wife felt called to move to Charlotte to play the Charlotte Eagles. During the offseason, Bentos served at Iglesia Camino Del Rey and led the couples ministry, organized different services, and began working as a pastor in the youth ministry.

In 2010, Bentos retired from soccer to follow God’s full time call to vocational ministry. Today, Bentos serves as a pastor. He leads Spanish ministry at Northside Baptist Church and the church’s outreach program.

Gustavo began serving with CrossTraining in 2017.
